The event took place from February 26 to 28 inside a historic Art Deco former post office building in Santa Monica that has become synonymous with the fair since its launch. Around 30 galleries from Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Paris, Chicago and elsewhere participated with solo or two-person exhibitions arranged in a spacious, museum-style layout rather than traditional booths, The Art Newspaper reported. This approach fostered a collegial atmosphere and encouraged longer viewer engagement, according to the publication’s review.

Dealers at the fair highlighted the relaxed pace and focused presentations as key advantages over busier concurrent events across the Los Angeles region during Frieze week. The Art Newspaper noted that several stands stood out for their thoughtful installations, including balanced spatial arrangements and integrated seating that enhanced the overall experience. Curators from institutions including LACMA joined collectors in attending the compact three-day fair.

The Post-Fair model was created by gallerist Chris Sharp to address rising costs and pressures facing mid-sized galleries at larger commercial events. A subsequent report from Art Basel and UBS placed global art market sales at $59.6 billion in 2025, reflecting a 4 percent increase from the prior year amid continued recalibration. That assessment found art fairs accounted for 35 percent of dealer turnover, the highest proportion since 2022, with mid-sized operations seeing notable gains from such participation.

Feedback collected by The Art Newspaper indicated positive sales results for a number of exhibitors, particularly in segments benefiting from the fair’s targeted audience of professionals and collectors. The review described the overall delivery as successful precisely because of its deliberate restraint and emphasis on quality over scale. International participation grew in the 2026 edition with new additions from Europe and Asia.

Organisers have since announced an expansion of the Post-Fair concept to Paris in October 2026 during Art Basel Paris week, where it will occupy two historic buildings in the Marais with a similar roster of around 34 galleries. The Paris edition will maintain the invitation-only, solo-focused format that defined the Santa Monica original, according to statements from the organisers. This development builds directly on the foundation established by the February event’s reception.

The Art Newspaper review underscored how the fair’s minimalist design reduced operational burdens while still facilitating meaningful artist and gallery exposure. Attendance figures and visitor feedback pointed to a concentrated rather than mass audience drawn to the event’s distinctive character. Such outcomes align with broader dealer surveys showing a preference for targeted fairs that deliver measurable value in an uneven market environment.
