The Art Newspaper’s preview published on 8 April 2026 led with several key exhibitions that form the backbone of Chicago’s spring visual arts calendar. The recommendations encompass painting, sculpture and thematic explorations of Caribbean music and culture across prominent venues. These shows arrive as the city hosts Expo Chicago with around 130 galleries at Navy Pier that same month.

The Art Newspaper’s preview listed Dabin Ahn’s first solo exhibition with Document gallery as a highlight running through 6 June. The Seoul-born Chicago-based artist presented new paintings meditating on memory, time and grief while continuing experiments with breaking and expanding the picture plane. One work featured in coverage was Ahn’s Torso (Nocturne) from 2026.

Document gallery operates spaces in both Chicago and Lisbon according to the publication. The exhibition builds on Ahn’s established practice in the local scene. Such gallery presentations complement larger museum offerings during the busy spring period.

The Art Newspaper reported that the Art Institute of Chicago opened Lucas Samaras: Sitting, Standing, Walking, Looking drawn from its permanent collection including works recently donated by the artist’s estate. The Greek American artist who lived from 1936 to 2024 was an irrepressible experimenter whose practice extended into everyday life. The publication noted that his signature method of manipulating film allowed him to create outrageous distortions of himself and his world.

The Lucas Samaras exhibition runs through 20 July at the Art Institute of Chicago according to the preview. It foregrounds the breadth of his output across media. The show reflects the museum’s ongoing focus on its holdings of modern and contemporary work.

According to The Art Newspaper the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago was scheduled to open Dancing the Revolution: From Dancehall to Reggaetón on 14 April running through 20 September. The exhibition examines cultural expressions through visual art with works including Josefina Santos’s Dominican Soundsystems 1 from 2021. This presentation aligns with the institution’s emphasis on contemporary social and cultural themes.

The Art Newspaper separately reported that the Obama Presidential Center due to open in June 2026 has art at its core with commissions by artists including Julie Mehretu, Theaster Gates and Maya Lin. Louise Bernard the center’s museum director curated special sections at Expo Chicago tied to the campus. These developments add momentum to Chicago’s spring 2026 cultural programming.
