The Art Newspaper reported on February 2, 2026, that Art Basel departed from its conventional booth model for the Qatar debut by requiring each of the 87 participating galleries to present a single artist. Vincenzo de Bellis, Art Basel’s chief artistic officer and global director of fairs, told the publication that the event was designed to respond specifically to its location with an open-plan, museum-like arrangement featuring benches instead of standard seating. The fair occupied seven venues in Msheireb Downtown Doha including the M7 innovation hub run by Qatar Museums and the Doha Design District with special projects installed between the principal sites.
More than half of the 84 artists shown came from Southwest Asia and North Africa with the selection reflecting those active in the region, according to figures from the organiser. Egyptian artist Wael Shawky served as artistic director for the inaugural edition and collaborated with de Bellis on the curatorial theme of Becoming which explored metamorphosis, transition and liminal states. Art Basel’s post-fair statement noted that 16 first-time exhibitors took part including several regional galleries such as Hafez Gallery from Saudi Arabia and Tabari Artspace from Dubai.
Representatives from more than 85 museums and foundations attended the event which ran through February 7, 2026, an Art Basel announcement stated. Institutions present included the Museum of Islamic Art, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art and Qatar’s Art Mill Museum alongside international bodies such as Tate, the Guggenheim and the Whitney Museum of American Art. The organiser reported that over 17,000 visitors attended across VIP and public days with nearly half of private collectors and patrons hailing from the MENASA region.
Qatar Museums partnered with Qatar Sports Investments and QC+ to present the fair which an Art Basel release described as establishing a new long-term platform for artistic exchange and market development in the MENASA region. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, chairperson of Qatar Museums, conducted a private walkthrough with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani before the public opening, Artsy reported. The country’s cultural strategy has included major investments in museums and cultural infrastructure since 2006 according to multiple regional analyses.
Galleries described the format as encouraging deeper engagement and institutional sales rather than high-volume transactions, The Art Newspaper found in conversations with participants. Participation costs ranged from $15,000 to $25,000 with discounts available for emerging galleries, a later report in the same publication indicated. Special projects featured ten large-scale site-specific works by artists including Rayyane Tabet with 80 percent of those artists from the region according to de Bellis.
Art Basel CEO Noah Horowitz said in a closing statement that the edition provided a powerful validation of a shared vision for the fair in the region. Wassan Al-Khudhairi, founding director of Mathaf, was later appointed artistic director for the 2027 edition scheduled for January 28 to 30 with previews on January 26 and 27, an Art Basel update confirmed. The inaugural event also included a Conversations series and public programming staged across cultural venues in Msheireb.
