Open Magazine’s Cut To Change feature detailed how Saurabh Maurya of MARGN secured the R|Elan Circular Design Challenge 2026 trophy at the October 14 ceremony that launched the latest edition of Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI. The label views clothing as a mutable entity and transforms essential menswear items such as shirts, tees, trousers and outerwear through changes in cuts, textures and combinations of handmade crafts with technical precision. Puffers receive hand-knitting while suits feature quilting, vests become lightweight tie-ups and shirts gain asymmetrical cuts that recall kaftan fluidity, with muted palettes further developed using appliqué, embroidery, hand-wrinkling and knitted details.

The feature noted that Maurya earned a place in Lakme Fashion Week x FDCI’s GenNext programme in 2024 before winning the first edition of The Himalayan Knot Design Prize presented by Royal Enfield Social Mission and Vogue India later that year. In a parallel recognition, Anil Padia of Yoshita 1967 took runner-up honors with a collection of mini dresses, form-fitting separates, sheer designs and tights that used cotton threads along with recycled glass mirrors as embellishments and ghungroos. Padia, who holds Kenyan and Indian ancestry, had previously claimed the Savoir-Faire Prize at the 2026 LVMH Prize.

According to Hemant Sharma, President of the Polyester Segment at Reliance Industries Limited, the 2026 Circular Design Challenge attracted 220 applications from over 15 countries. Sharma said the purpose of the CDC was to provide a platform to young entrepreneurs to improve sustainability in the fashion industry. The initiative has drawn close to 1,500 applications since 2018 with around 40 participants reaching the final stage over the years and receiving mentorship from leading industry figures.

A DFU Publications report placed the projected value of India’s circular fashion market at 15.8 billion dollars by 2032 with an expected compound annual growth rate of 18.5 percent. The same analysis forecast the luxury fashion rental segment to hit 6.7 billion dollars at a 21.5 percent CAGR while resale and re-commerce could reach 9.1 billion dollars growing at 16.2 percent annually. Gen Z consumers have accelerated the move toward models that emphasize usage value over ownership in apparel consumption.

Reliance Industries Limited said the winner would receive a cash prize of 16,000 dollars and the chance to present an individual showcase at the March 2027 edition of Lakme Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI. Sharma added that most awardees have managed to scale their ideas and commercialize them to a significant extent. The challenge forms part of the India-France Year of Innovation 2026 and involves partnerships with the United Nations in India and other entities.

The Cut To Change article in Open Magazine explored additional examples of how designers repurpose discarded materials, traditional crafts and existing textiles to create new life cycles for fashion items. Yoshita 1967’s approach to recycled embellishments complements MARGN’s craft-led interventions in producing desirable sustainable options. Such developments occur as the overall Indian apparel market reached 109.5 billion dollars in 2025 according to data cited by DFU Publications.
