The North-West University recently staged a series of cultural events across its Mahikeng, Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark campuses that highlighted shared heritage and fostered inclusion among a diverse student body. On the Vanderbijlpark Campus the annual Culture Integration Day on 26 September took the form of a symbolic Campus Wedding that represented the blending of South African and international traditions through performances and displays. More than 30 teams drawn from faculties, departments and residences showcased elements ranging from isiZulu and German to Sepedi, Rwandan, Tsonga and Ghanaian traditions in fashion, cuisine, music and dance while a tree-planting ceremony symbolised new beginnings, NWU News reported.

The Mahikeng Campus followed with its fifth annual Cultural Day on 4 October at Sedibeng Park where students competed in traditional African food, dance, music and poetry presentations to emphasise continental unity. Sol Plaatjie Residence claimed first place for the second successive year ahead of Kgosi Dick Montshioa and Mbada residences while Charmaine Molosioa, manager for student life, noted the strong participation of students from Nigeria, Botswana and Lesotho. Molosioa told NWU News that future editions would incorporate painting and drama to broaden opportunities for showcasing talent and reinforcing the university’s diversity commitment.

International Flag Day observances unfolded on separate dates at each campus transforming venues into vibrant displays of global unity with flag processions, cultural performances and continental cuisine. Students donned traditional attire and shared personal journeys from countries including Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Botswana. Students’ Representative Council president Kamogelo Zwane welcomed participants at Vanderbijlpark by stating, “We are a global institution. This event is a reflection of the values we uphold – unity in diversity and inclusion across all walks of student life.”

NWU preliminary figures for 2026 place total enrolment at 58,751 students with international representation from approximately 25 countries concentrated on the Potchefstroom and Mahikeng campuses, university statistics show. These gatherings reinforced the institution’s aim to mould distinct campus subcultures into a single NWU identity grounded in mutual respect and social justice. Prof Mphahlele, speaking during the events, observed that the university functions as a microcosm of society and urged students to become ethically grounded global citizens who champion diversity while confronting societal challenges.

Sibusiso Hlongwane, the Student Campus Council societies liaison and international students’ officer, described the Flag Day activities as a resounding success that built lasting friendships across cultures. He noted the high level of enthusiasm and participation demonstrated the campus community’s dedication to inclusion and global citizenship, according to NWU News. The coordinated celebrations formed part of ongoing initiatives that integrate academic and student-life programming to nurture a unitary institutional culture.

Over R40,000 in prizes were distributed at the Vanderbijlpark event for categories such as best food presentation, poetry and cultural king and queen while judges evaluated creativity and authenticity. The activities extended beyond performance to facilitate dialogue on issues including racism, tribalism and xenophobia that affect broader society. NWU News captured the overarching message in its feature titled One NWU, many cultures: Campuses unite through celebration, underscoring how such occasions strengthen bonds across the university’s multi-campus structure.
