Marisa Chearavanont and Kulapat Yantrasast spoke at the CNN Global Perspectives summit in Bangkok on October 14, stressing that cultural venues achieve their greatest impact by healing divisions, convening people and opening doors to all. A Nation Thailand account of the session noted their call for culture to function as a neighbour instead of a remote landmark, with examples ranging from open street entrances to live artist studios and exploratory natural settings. The discussion, moderated by CNN’s Hanako Montgomery, highlighted how such changes respond to a society increasingly dominated by digital interfaces and artificial intelligence.

Chearavanont, founder of Bangkok Kunsthalle and Khao Yai Art Forest, described her Kunsthalle project as free to the public and housed in a former printing facility damaged by fire in 2002, where original charred walls remain to symbolise cycles of decay and renewal. Yantrasast, who heads WHY Architecture, outlined his work on a forthcoming national museum in India billed as the world’s largest while advocating similar community emphasis in Thailand. Both speakers positioned these initiatives within a growing cultural network across the capital that prioritises participation over passive observation.

Yantrasast told participants that culture is not a luxury but brain food for society. He contrasted the way artificial intelligence learns collectively across networks with the ongoing human process of discovering one another through direct interaction. Empathy between cultures is essential for meaningful connections, he added, framing museums as sites where people assemble to debate shared futures rather than simply examine relics from the past.

The architect praised Thais as among the world’s most creative populations and saw the CNN forum as a platform that could enhance their international standing. He likened the democratisation of culture to shifting from a uniform imported dish to a locally blended one that combines multiple elements in new ways. According to the Nation Thailand report, this perspective reflects Bangkok’s expanding infrastructure of galleries, creative districts and adaptive reuse projects that blend heritage with contemporary use.

Thailand’s creative economy produced 1.44 trillion baht in value during the year, equivalent to 8.01 percent of GDP, the Creative Economy Agency reported in its CEA Forum 2026. The agency highlighted rapid post-crisis recovery in the sector and targets to empower hundreds of thousands of creators while generating new intellectual property assets. These statistics coincide with the National Soft Power Strategy Committee, established in 2023, which coordinates promotion across 11 fields including festivals, music, film and design to amplify Thailand’s global appeal.

A World Bank presentation delivered in Bangkok the previous day estimated the creative sector near 1.7 trillion baht and urged enhanced intellectual property safeguards together with financing tools to support export growth and formal employment. The Ministry of Culture meanwhile advanced a Thai-Thai policy in April that integrates heritage preservation with economic goals and public participation metrics. Such coordinated efforts underpin the community-centred models Chearavanont and Yantrasast presented, where cultural assets extend beyond institutional walls into daily neighbourhood life.
