Oxford Street in Sydney will transform into the city’s largest outdoor arts venue this weekend with a free three-day festival organised by the City of Sydney as part of its Art & About program. The event from Friday October 23 to Sunday October 25 will deliver more than 40 hours of programming including dance performances, live music, drag shows, light installations, workshops, markets and interactive artworks. According to the City of Sydney the festival will activate streets, public spaces, venues and shopfronts while highlighting the area’s heritage and ongoing renewal.

Festivities begin on Friday evening with the closure of Bourke Street at Taylor Square from 5pm to 10pm for a disco-themed street party. The pedestrianised space will host DJs, drag performances, dancers and roving entertainers, the City of Sydney said in its announcement. A 24-hour light installation in Taylor Square will run throughout the weekend alongside themed banner galleries that honour the precinct’s history.

City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore stated that the event forms part of the council’s broader vision to revitalise Oxford Street as a thriving cultural and creative precinct. “Events like this give people a great reason to come celebrate the precinct’s creativity, culture and energy while discovering the exciting future taking shape across the precinct,” Moore said. The initiative builds on recent streetscape upgrades and cultural investments that have sought to restore the area’s distinctive character after years of disruption.

The City of Sydney noted that initiatives such as funding for Qtopia and private developments have contributed to the precinct’s renewal. A restoration project at 56-122 Oxford Street has created more than 12,000 square metres of mixed retail and commercial space across three city blocks, according to the City of Sydney. Foley Street has also emerged with new public art, dining venues and retail experiences that complement the main strip.

Retail and hospitality businesses along Oxford Street are expected to benefit from increased foot traffic generated by the festival, the City of Sydney reported. Saturday’s farmers market will feature fresh produce, artisan goods, coffee, flowers, art and gourmet street food while cabaret, comedy, a one-woman play and pop-up performances continue across the precinct. The programming aims to draw both local residents and visitors to discover the area’s evolving offerings.

Oxford Street has long served as a centre for Sydney’s LGBTQ+ community and creative scene, hosting events such as the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras each year. The City of Sydney has supported this identity through targeted cultural programs while encouraging compatible commercial growth that respects the street’s heritage buildings. Festival organisers have integrated interactive artworks and creative workshops to engage participants directly with the precinct’s past and future development plans.
